Perhaps I did not choose my words carefully enough, in regard to hearing
"commercial" music at Solid Gold, or perhaps what I think I'm going to hear
isn't what I'm going to hear at all, because what I'm assuming you mean by
"commercial" isn't at all what "you" mean...
Cade said something about "cutting edge tracks". I'm not really sure what he
means by that. Does this mean that these so-called cutting edge tracks can
never enjoy commercial success? Are "commercial" records necessarily
synonymous with "old" or "classic" records?
Cade also said, "If a DJ jumps up and plays nothing but hits then I wonder what
he is getting pais [sic] for because we all know the hits and anyone can buy
them."
I can tell you exactly what I would happy to pay that DJ for... MAKING ME
DANCE!!! SO WHAT if "anybody" can buy those records... I could go out and buy
thse records and play them in my living room every day or listen to them on cd
in my car everywhere I go (which I do), but it's not quite the same thing as
cutting loose to them on a dancefloor surrounded by thumping bass, now is it?
I agree with Cade that it would suck to hear someone play the same old "retro"
sets all the time, but that kind of set wasn't what I was referring to as
"commercial" in my original post. I used that word simply to refer to the
kinds of records that seem to make everyone dance, which are often called
"commercial" in a generally negative sense.
Semantics obvioulsy play a large role in anyone's position in this situation.
I'm especially curious now about exactly what I'll be hearing this weekend.
If I can expect a "retro" set, then I am even more excited than I was before!
Someone had referred to "dressing up" previously, and if we'll be getting a
retro set, then I think we should make it especially nostalgic and bust out the
old party gear...i.e. circa 1995...I'm dying to unretire my XXXL Polo shirts...
