I found Allen's (dtp at socal.rr.com) comments insightful. He brings up an
interesting analogy to House and Hip Hop:
> "Unfortunately for hip-hop, corporations saw the potential in it and

> rapid-fire crap."

I think Hip Hop's rise from the streets to commercial success was ultimately
a good thing for pop culture.
Sure, there is more market-driven drivel out there now, but the overall
success sparked a global awareness of the genre, and solidified it as the most
widespread American music since Rock N Roll.
I bet nowadays there are listeners that discover 'Hip Hop' on power 106, then
later want to know more about it and dig deeper. For every JayZ cut that
makes the airwaves there are 100 underground joints hittin'. (Anyone hear that new
Ursula Rucker & King Britt?).
The same holds true for todays dance music. Look how much to-do was made
about the Mitsubishi & Microsoft ads? Some of us were bummed, but those ads
sparked interest in dance music nationwide, and ripples of their success were felt
by many.
Props to Hip Hop for, among other things, setting the standard for sample
based music made with drum machines, which is played on Technics through 12"
vinyl - without it, would we even have House as we know it today? perhaps Disco
paved the way for House moreover, but isnt it interesting how the first
commercially successful Hip Hop/rap tunes were actually recorded over 'disco breaks'
(Blondie, Sugar Hill Gang)

p.s. The whole commerical radio thing is another issue entirely,as pretty
much every commercial station plays the same old 10 songs in a row, regardless of
genre. I'd love to hear peoples opinions of satellite radio such as XM, as I
have not tapped in to that yet. Whats the price-to-value ratio?
