DO NOT stay by the airport.  you'll prolly be spending
most of your time in manhattan, so stay there.  check
cheaptickets.com for hotel recommendations.  figure
out what you want from a place--just somewhere to
sleep, or a nice room.  btw, rooms in nyc are A LOT
smaller.

renting a car would be silly in nyc--you have to find
a park, or pay astronomical fees for parking lots
(think downtown l.a. during the day x4)

the taxis aren't that expensive there.  you can get
from downtown to uptown manhattan for about $5-10. 
i'd suggest the train or walking as your main
transport, but every now and then you might feel like
taking a taxi home so you don't have to wait--just
flag one down, they're cheap.
