[Dynagroove] my opinion about Future Ape, and the LA underground scene...

I like what the two jasons have said. They are both very well respected and have experience in the LA scene that eclipses the majority of us on this list. However, I think that the idea of locals pulling weight is somewhat utopian. Regardless of what people say, the idea for promoters is to pull their numbers. In most cases advancement of the scene is secondary to making back the money they put into it, which is understandable considering the thousands of dollars that promoters risk. The truth of the matter is that an out of towner, or whole line up them, is going to pull significantly more people than a local line-up. I know I do it myself. After several years in the scene, it's hard to get excited for the same people you can see at a bar on a Tuesday in Tustin. But, if we want to push the local LA scene, the only way to do that is to let our dollars talk. Support a party of nothing but locals. After a few sell out, promoters will get the hint. It's not like
they want to pay the astronomical booking fees; deal with asshole agents, silly contract riders, airline tickets, and rockstar attitudes. I am sure they would much prefer to book a lineup they can confirm using their myspace buddy list. So I guess my point is to all of the people who seconded, thirded and etc. the comments that have been said on this list, next time you are choosing how to spend your money, go to local show instead of paying to see the new producer du jour. Or else, quit complaining.

The parties I remember in early 1990s LA featured all LA DJs.
I think mainly because the scene was just starting out.

Then slowly the parties got bigger, and news traveled..? other market's scenes started blossoming on a national level.

At first, I think the whole out of town headliner' thing was a promoters' attempt to connect us all with a 'patchwork quilt' of different regional sounds- and also a way to show us all, 'look how our scene is growing', and educate us on what else is going on out there.

But there was still usually a good balance of strong local talent at these parties.

Nowadays, having a big massive dance event in LA (or anywhere) with no local talent in the main area is getting away from that original formula (see above).

I think there should always be strong local DJs at the big parties to give the event a local face,
otherwise what's to differentiate one 'massive' from another in city after city?

This is why Grape Ape can do what they are doing, they are going back to that original formula that was growing the scene in the 90's..

Future Ape: they are doing everything i think the scene needs. some out of
towners, but mostly all the long time LA locals. and the same amount of
hype that would go along with anyone in some magazine's top50 whatevers.
when promoters book ALL out of town djs, it makes people think our locals
are just, well, locals. but locals from where? THE LOS ANGELES UNDERGOUND!
let's hype up RAW, let's hype up Ron D Core, Steve Loria, Barry Weaver,
Fester! Many of the "big show" promoters used to use us all, but somehow
got caught up in... i don't know what... I love you Pasquale, and you know
it, but NOT ONE LA dj in the house or trance room at EDC? What does that do
for the morale of the LA raver and their feeling about THEIR DJs? People
used to flock in just as many numbers to see Taylor, Sandra, Eli Star...
don't believe the hype it's a sequel! Future Ape... what are they
doing???? AMAZING promotion... with who? Ron D core, Fester, RAW, mostly
LA "legends"... and a few tried and true old school out-a towners like
Frankie Bones. Trust me, we know how to rock the crowd. But my main point
is when the big parties book NO LA djs, it sends a message that LA djs
aren't as good as these famed out of town djs. BULLSHIT! I got into the
scene and WORSHIPED Doc Martin, DJ Dan, Ron D Core, Steve Loria, Barry
Weaver... Let's show the world that LA has world class DJs, and that if you
wanna see them, you gotta come here! THANK YOU Future Ape for doing this...
I've been waiting for this... LA's the place.
