Jeff,
Just curious about some of your comments. The reason MAD is taking
ads is so it CAN survive (see my post to Chad about dwindling
circulation).
You also ask "How can you do a send up of a new hit movie if the movie
is supporting your magazine with ads?". Well, they've done it before.
The only real movie ad MAD has ever run was for Up the Academy. That
didn't stop them from running a parody of it and, in fact, calling it
one of the worst movies ever made!
In addition, it is a well documented fact (see MAD World of Williams
Gaines by Frank Jacobs, for example) that movie companies often want
MAD to lampoon their movie and send advance information and
promotional stills to the magazine to ensure that it happens. Another
factor to consider, Warner Brothers is one of the owners of MAD. Has
it stopped MAD from making fun of WB movies...not in the least. MAD
even did a full color parody of the WB Studio Stores. Does it bother
WB? Not that I'm aware of. In fact, WB allowed MAD access to the
first Batman movie so that the satire of that movie actually hit the
stands BEFORE the movie was released. If a movie company is afraid of
MAD making fun of their movie than I doubt they would advertise in
MAD!
Just some observations on my part, you certainly don't have to agree
with them, but I doubt that advertising is the death knell for MAD.
Changing demographics and kids who are more interested in video games
and the internet than reading is a more likely culprit!
Mike S.

I think it is a sad day for Mad because I don't think they will be able to
survive. They always had the freedom to lampoon (no wait, that's a
different magazine) anybody because they didn't have advertisers hovering
over them. How can you do a send up of a new hit movie if the movie is
supporting your magazine with ads?
