In answer to the OT TOWEL DAY post, I think I'd be
hard pressed to find GROO fans who didn't enjoy The
HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY and it's sequels. Am
I right?
There are two outstanding series, both of which I
think of as one story comprised of 4 books, that I
constantly reread.
The first is THE HOBBIT+LORD OF THE RINGS (the latter
Tolkien himself never considered a trilogy; rather as
one book published in 3 installments).
The second is the four books of the aforementioned
HITCHHIKER'S TRILOGY (alas, I must ignore the fifth
book of the humorously mislabeled trilogy as being
Mostly Useless). I've alternately reread at least one
of these two sagas every year for the last 20 years,
and I'm about due for my biannual fix of HITCHHIKER'S.
Tomorrow being the aforementioned Towel Day
remembrance, what better day to start? I even bought
myself a jet black towel, to be adorned with a DON'T
PANIC button.
It's funny, for MANY, MANY YEARS I've kept a towel
both in my car (when I've had one) and in my backpack,
in honor of the late Mr. Adams hysterical series. In
trying to be goofy, it's inevitably turned out to be
quite a useful thing to have handy!!!
About this Towel Day stuff, Douglas Adams might have
been quite amused at the absurdity of the tribute.
However, considering how tough it was for him to
escape the overwhelming shadow of the HITCHHIKER'S
GUIDE, it's just as possible he might have been
annoyed by it.
By the way, I hope all of the HITCHHIKER's fans out
there have tried his 2 DIRK GENTLY books as well: DIRK
GENTLY'S HOLISTIC DETECTIVE AGENCY and THE LONG, DARK
TEA-TIME OF THE SOUL. While having a different flovor
and pacing, they were wonderfully inspired madness!!!
(There WERE only 2, right???)
