Janet,
My opinion is that when I meet someone I don't know, I generally
address them as Mr. or Ms. Whatever. This holds true especially if
that person is older than I am (becoming rarer all the time), but
also I will do it for a younger person. I just think this shows
respect. I wouldn't do this for Sergio, but ONLY because I've met him
before. The same goes for Mark, as well as the fact that we've
conversed on the list. This doesn't reflect any lack of respect
though. At one con, I was introduced to Mark Schultz (sp?), Bill
Stout, Berne Hogarth, and Denis Kitchen by my friend Don Punchatz.
Since he introduced me by my first name and introduced them by their
first names and was good friends with them, I had no trouble with
calling them by their first names, even though Berne Hogarth is MUCH
older than I am. I just think it's important to be sensitive and show
what respect we can. Heaven knows, they probably get enough
disrespect from others. IMHO.
Chris (Mr. Schechner to you!) :-)
