Special Themes for 2004

Each year Comic-Con showcases major events and anniversaries that are part of the comics and pop culture world. This year, events we’re celebrating will include:

•90th birthday of Bob Clampett and the 20th anniversary of the Clampett Award
The late, famed animator Bob Clampett and his family have always been good friends of Comic-Con, and one of Comic-Con's main awards, the Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award, is dedicated in Bob’s memory. It’s only fitting that we take this opportunity to honor his career as creator of Beanie and Cecil and some of the most hilarious Warner Brothers cartoons ever made.

•75th anniversary of Popeye
Why, the old sea dog doesn’t look a day over 74! (We wonders how old Poopdeck Pappy is?)

•75th anniversary of Tarzan and Buck Rogers in comic strips
The adventure comic strip was really fully born in 1929 with the premiere appearances of both Tarzan and Buck Rogers in the funny papers.

•50th anniversary of Godzilla in America
Wow! Fifty years? Hard to believe! And how many times has the big guy destroyed Tokyo?

•40th anniversary of Creepy
Jim Warren reinvented horror comics when he launched Creepy in 1964. Utilizing some of the best artists in comics, Eerie and Vampirella soon followed.

•35th annual Comic-Con International
35 years of comics, movies, TV, animation, pop culture and, most importantly, FUN.

•20th anniversary of Usagi Yojimbo
Stan Sakai’s warrior bunny is one of comics' enduring characters.

•10th anniversary of Hellboy
Although he first appeared in the 1993 edition of San Diego Comic-Con Comics, it wasn’t until 1994 that Hellboy first started to be regularly published. And of course 2004 marks the premiere of the Hellboy movie.

•10th anniversary of Supernatural Law
The "best comic you’re not reading" is 10 years old, and the lead characters, Wolff and Byrd, are 25! Help creator/self-publisher Batton Lash celebrate these amazing anniversaries.

You can be a part of the celebration! You can submit art and articles on these anniversary events to the 2004 Souvenir Book. Check the Souvenir Book page for complete details on how you can contribute.
