My insignificant opinion is that our capitalistic society is structured to
squeeze the maximum amount of profit out of any piece of "intellectual
property". One technique is to resell the same property in different
formats, over and over and over again. Sometimes the profits go to the
original intellectual. Sometimes they don't (if they are Motown recording
artists).
The technique worked for music since I have the same Elvis songs on
8-track, cassette, 45 RPM, 33 1/3 RPM vinyl, CD, and CD Boxed set. I
haven't tried MP3 downloads yet.
It worked for movies since I own 2000 Beta tapes, 200 VHS tapes, and 20
DVDs which will also be obsolete in a couple years.
I have every Mad ever published, originals, individual reproductions,
trade PBs, Russ Cochran's boxed reproduction, and Broderbund CD-ROM
collection. I don't think Bill Gaines is enjoying the fruits of his labor
any more.
At a time when original intellectual property is so lame (Brittney Spears,
Paris Hilton, Mutts, Doonsbury), the market place will still support the
reproduced quality stuff from the past (Sopranos soundtrack, Peanuts).
But my basement is full.
Gene
