Accidentally watched a bit of that TV show 'Miss Popularity' the other night.  The contestants had to sing 'Waltzing Matilda' and one of them asked what a swagman was (it's in the lyrics), and they were told that a swagman was an itinerant drifter who went from place to place doing things for food and lodgings.  Aha I thought, a mendicant!  Then they had to make various dips for the ho-down dance and decorate the hall with bales of hay, which every gardener knows is the essential ingredient for mulch.  Suddenly Australian culture began to make sense.
