There was a SF short story about this type of situation many years ago.... 
Involving the Postal Service, space warps (or something) and mail to/from 
various points, with the most distant arriving soonest. The main character finally 
sent a letter addressed to the other side of the galaxy... mailed it in the 
morning, and got a reply in the afternoon mail....
