Mark Evanier's News From ME Blog at
http://www.newsfromme.com/archives/2008_01_01.html#014561 has the
story of a DUI accident outside of his house, right before the stroke
of 12 midnight.

No fatalities, but the response from the 911 Dispatcher shows just how
many New Year's revelers literally get slammed every New Year's Eve.

In 2007 I lost a good friend and coworker to a Drunk Driver, and only a
week ago a man from work whom I'm casually friendly with, a very kind
and friendly, caring man, was himself driving drunk when he took the
life of an innocent victim. Kindness, personality, doesn't matter. He
was wrong to get behind the wheel, criminally wrong, and this death
will haunt him forever.

The last time I drove under the influence was 30 years ago. The crash
occurred BEFORE I drove, not after. I was partying around the corner
from my house, and had decided to walk home instead of driving, when a
friend from Jersey started twisting my arm to show him how to get home.
I gave him directions, he insisted he needed to "follow me", but I
insisted i was in no condition to drive, and would not!

Another friend piped up and said "I'm okay to drive, I really haven't
been drinking, but I just have my learner's permit. I can drive your
car if you are a passenger!

I said yes (bad judgement), and HA!!! It turns out he DID have too much
to drink! My face destroyed the windshield when he hit a curb head-on
at pretty decent speed, nearly wrecking the car. Instead of waiting for
the cops to get there, I slowly limped the mashed up car home, and then
woke up my parents and told them what had happened.

The next time I saw the friend who had been driving my car was the last
time i would ever see him. He never offered to pay any of the damages
to the car, but there he was bragging about the $100+ worth of albums
(at 1979 prices) he had just bought that day! I cursed him out and
never saw him again. No loss, good riddance.

Anyway, all of this is to say, for 2008 let's all resolve to THINK WHEN
WE DRINK!!!
