I'd suggest something that is NOT downtown, but IS near a trolley station.  I

I think Tom got a place in San Ysidro the last time he came-- after finding  
the hotel he had booked, had canceled his reservation because he hadn't  
actually paid in advance (and re-sold the room for about triple what he had  
reserved it for). So, first, check the rates for the dates you want (many up the  
price during the summer... and even more when they know there is going to be  
something like Comic Con...), and pay for the one you select now. Just like  
buying the "memberships"....
