Ah,
I'll ask them. The next comic-con is on in October this year in Bombay.
We've always had American and British comics in India. Over the years ebay
and a couple of online sites (now defunct) such as tomheroes.com,
crazyeli.com, and 50centcomics.com have been a mainstay for me. I used to
ship directly when postage was cheaper but in the last few years, I ship to
a friend in NY and he then ships me my stuff in large parcels.
Sergio's pretty well known here in India among the comic crowd - he's the
MAD doddle artist to them. MAD comics have been around for ages. I have a
truckload of MADs from the 60s and 70s, most of the latter have his art in
them. I got into Groo through a consignment of indies I got from
tomheroes.com. I sold those off a while back and I recently picked up a
complete run of the Pacific, Epic, Marvel, and Dark Horse books from an
ebay seller. The books came in a few days ago. I was surprised at the
condition. They were all in perfect NM shape. I'm a little used to getting
slightly dented reader copies from ebayers, so this was a surprise. I'm a
huge fan of Sergio's art and Mark's wit, and Groo just does it so well, I
can't imagine not owning every single Groo book out there. I was waiting
for the Groo Treasury. I remember seeing a promo somewhere for it. But I
never saw any release date and I got fed up of waiting on it, so I picked
up the entire run.
Before we went off the gold standard in 1991, I used to pick up Marvel and
DC comics from my local newstand here in my suburb in Bombay. After 1991,
they stopped importing Marvel and DC comics. It was years before I finally
got to see them again. But in the last six years, comics (Trades and HCs)
are now easily available back and they're pretty cheap overall. I pay much
less for my comics than amazon.com rates - and there's always sales
throughout the year with huge discounts. Comics are just really cheap
nowadays.
I've never heard of a Groo comic published in Hindi, but I've seen a copy
of Jean Van Hamme's XIII published in Tamil. The XIII Tamil edition was
printed in black and white on cheap newsprint, and was quite a treat. Most
American comics just get read in American. I read french BDs straight of
the lot - They're much harder to get than American comics. I follow
Arleston's stuff - Trolls, Lanfeuste etc and LEOs stuff. Cinebook has
published several great series in English - Aldebaran, Betelguese, Antares,
Scorpion, The Chimpanzee Complex, Thorgal. I keep buying the Cinebook
releases and occasionally get original sets of bds (when I can get them
cheap).
Scans get all of us comic readers, collectors, writers, and artists here in
India through the year as we don't get floppies locally. I generally follow
series, and when they're done, I shop online for an auction for a set of
floppies or wait for the trade to release so I can order it from a local
online bookstore. Right now I'm reading Saga, Orc Stain, Hellboy, the new
BPRD Hell on Earth arc, all the ICON titles, Fatale, Fables, American
Vampire, and my favourite Locke and Key.
Cheers
