[Dynagroove] too much house...

Hey there,
Agreed that there is too much crap house music. When I buy records now, so
much of the music I hear is absolute nonsense. Out of 100 records I listen to
in the house category, I'm lucky if I find 2 I can take home. Sometimes, the
old stuff is better not because it makes you remember good times....it's
simply better. Hearing Simon's "I have a dream" being spun by Dan Levine last
night at MOR was awsome, and on Martin Luther King's B-day (nice touch!).
I dunno about too many parties. Certainly the laws of the Jungle can apply,
wading out the "lame" parties, but it's almost like buying stock, and you have
a number of companies in the same industry, and you can't tell which company
is going to be around in the future. Which stock do you buy hoping the
company doesn't crash? At one point in the past, and you may be too young to
remember this Jay, there was competition between VHS video and Betamax video. . . .
In any case, LA is a hip hop town, and mainstream Hip Hop at that, and I
can't believe how popular THEIR crappy parties and clubs are. Or what about
those clubs that play 80's and retro Rock, simply because it's chic to do so.
Don't get me wrong, i like those sometimes, but have you checked out the vibe
with THOSE parties? they reek of pretentiousness, with way too many falling down
drunks (same with Hip hop clubs).
So how do you explain how popular those non-house clubs are when they are so
completely cheezy? See, I view house parties as a way to elevate this city's
otherwise extremely mediocre night life. You should hear how shocked people
from Chicago, Miami, Vancouver, NY, Europe, San Fran, hell even Seattle for
Christ sake, are about LA's night scene. Maybe what we're going through is a
period of "catching up" with those cities. Maybe a big number of house parties
might be bad in the short term, but good in the long term, as hopefully the
quality events will perpetuate, and more Angelinos will begin to realize how
much BETTER these parties are than the crap club vibes they're being sold
elsewhere.
Off my soap box. thanks for listening.
Imad.
