While I am far more inclined to accept Sergio and Mark's version of the events, I would mention that my personal experience with Jim Shooter was overwhelmingly positive. I got to meet him at the same convention where I first met Sergio, and he volunteered to critique a story of mine. Looking back now, it was an absolutely horrible pile of moldy cheesdip, but Jim Shooter gave me some of the very first words of encouragement I ever got as a writer.

That said, the reason I even got into a conversation with him in the first place was that, during a panel discussion, he trotted out my least favorite writer line ever, that he's sold everything he ever wrote, and I asked, "So what's the secret to never writing crap?" Never trust a writer who claims he doesn't have trunk stories.
